Mine is the 1895SS model Marlin. Some of the stout reloads that I use in it kicks like a mule. I like using the hardcast bullets to shoot in mine. I sent my back in to the Marlin factory and had the Ballard cut rifling barrel installed on it so it would shoot both jacketed and cast bullets good.

If you dont mind my asking, what kind of money did they charge to change the barrel change. My gun is the 1895ss also with the micro grove. It is several years old. It shoots cast and jacketed good but I have the urge to go to the ballard type barrel..... Or not..... It shoots well enough now I would like the other barrel but hate to mess with it the way it shoots now. Thanks cowboy

They changed mine out for free since I had just bought it a couple of weeks earlier. I think they gave a price of 135 bucks to change one out that you had for a while. If you plan on shooting cast bullets, you need to install the Ballard barrel. If you just use jacketed bullets, the micro groove barrel will be OK. The Ballard barrel is for people that use both types of bullets.

Well I dont think my rifle would shoot much better than it does now. At least not $135 better. Most cast bullets will shoot at least 2 1/2" at 100 yards with the right load. I had some 300gr cast that would not even do that well at 35 yards, but they wouldnt shoot any better in my T/C Contender. I am still having a little problems with my 158 gr load. That is what I wanted the Ballard rifling for. This is my ground hog load. I use a 45cal muzzel loader sabot and .357 bullets. Not much recoil but still not the accuracy I hoped for. I am going to try some 180gr bullets to see if they work better. Later cowboy

cowboy, I guess that you know the 45-70 bullets are .458 inch in diameter and a regular 45 bullet comes in several diameters .451, .452 and .454 inch diameter don't you? If you are using regular 45 caliber bullets, they are not going to be very accurate as they are not fitting the riflings. All of them are not big enough in diameter to fit the rifling's of a 45-70. To get the best accuracy, you need to be sure your bullets or the sabots you use are .458 inch diameter in the 45-70.

The comment about 45 cast bullets being .451, 4.452, .454 is correct for like the 45 colt, 45acp. generally not for the rifle bullets which usually cast around the .458 mark plus or minus a couple of thousands.
